*Age Of Consent & Legal Sexual Activity for the State of
21st May 2001. Letter received from new Attorney-General Hon Rod Welford MP in reply to my email of 25th April. He confirms the definition of age of consent and legal sexual activity, but advises that he will not consider removing the Sodomy Law or make any effort to ensure the public is correctly informed about age of consent and legal sexual activity.

Thank you for your email dated 25th April 2001 about the age of consent and legal sexual activity.
As my predecessor informed you, the offence of unlawful sodomy applies to any person who sodomises another person under the age of 18 years or permits a male person under the age of 18 years to sodomise him or her.
The age of consent for other forms of sexual activity is 16 years of age.
I do not propose to introduce an proposals to alter the current law with respect to the age of consent for sodomy.
Again, as you have been previously advised, the Government does not propose to engage in an education campaign about these matters.
